A Mother’s Remembrance~ as told to Laura by Carolyn Rose
Illustrated by Laura

Carolyn Rose Kaelin was the ninth of eleven children born to Fred and Stephanie Kaelin. This placed her at the young end of a very large brood. The eleven were stair-stepped in age, with only 1 to 1-1/2 years between most of them. So, as you can imagine, whenever a new baby came along, the two prior children were barely more than babies themselves.
Mom recalled many times what she considered to be her earliest childhood memory. Like most early memories, it is brief but sweet. She couldn’t have been more than three, but she remembered how she and her younger sister, Anita, would each stand on either side of the rocking chair, feet on the bottom rockers, holding onto the armrests while their mother rocked and nursed the youngest, Norman. So there they would be, Mother Stephanie with baby in arms, Carolyn on the right and Anita on the left — all four rocking together as a sweet family unit. This was little Anita’s and Carolyn’s way of making sure all their mother’s attention did not go to the new baby. Because they definitely wanted their fair share.
