Boo Bear observed Christopher’s reaction, first with wonder and then dismay. In wide-eyed glee, Christopher snatched up the new toy and bolted to the yard, absentmindedly brushing Boo Bear aside as he departed. Boo bear was heartbroken–abandoned!–left behind like the torn packaging and bow destined for the rubbish bin.

Later that evening, Dad collected the forlorn Bear, gave him a little cuddle, and placed him on a shelf in Christopher’s room.

For days Boo Bear watched from the shelf, feeling alone and forgotten, as Christopher sounded toots, blasted gas, sprang his spring and whiffled his Geyser. How could Boo Bear ever compete with such excitement? The quiet, gentle bear felt dull and obsolete compared to the extravagant new toy. . .
