Chapter VIII
Froggy and Eunice grow up
“Froggy”
“Yes Eunice”
“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
Froggy didn”t have to think for one minute about that. “A toad, of course.”
“Me too,” said Eunice.
“Eunice,” said Froggy with a chuckle in her voice, “don’t be silly. You can’t grow up to be a toad. You’re a BEETLE!”
At this, Eunice’s lower lip began to quiver. “But…..but…..but,” she stammered, sounding like a motor boat that couldn’t quite get started. “But I want to be like YOU, Froggy,” she wailed. “I want to be pretty and smart and wonderful and know about things and kind and friendly and wise and curious and, and, and…….WONDERFUL!”
At that point, her face crumpled in the sorriest picture of woe you ever did see.
“But you will,” soothed Froggy. “you will be all of those things. You will be a pretty, smart, wise, curious, friendly, wonderful BEETLE!”
Upon hearing this, Eunice’s face slowly changed. Her eyebrows lifted and the corners of her mouth tilted up ever so gradually until finally she was wearing a huge smile. Her whole face became lit with a soft warm light, like the sun shining on smooth round rocks in the morning. Her wings took on their loveliest emerald glow as she wondered about what might be in store for her in the years ahead.
And with that, Froggy had no choice but to give Eunice a very…..big….hug.
