The pair went quiet, as they each enjoyed new sensations afforded by their different perspectives. Each was a little surprised at their own reaction.
After a bit, Toad began to feel as if his skin was drying out in the sun and wind. He missed the smell and feel of the rich garden soil right beneath him. For her part, Finch realized she was quite hungry and was eager for some tasty thistle seed. She also began to feel as if the ground was a bit dampish on her feathers.
Finch flew up to an arching branch of the maple. Toad hopped down off of the stone and landed with a plop right where Finch had been sitting. Each felt happy to be back in their own environment. But never again would they be so quick to question the lifestyle choices of other creatures.
“To each his own,” said finch.
“Indeed! Enjoy the view up there. It’s a good one!” said Toad. He felt he could speak with some authority, having so recently been somewhat of a high flyer himself.
Finch gave a little chirp in reply. Then she flew off to perch in the cherry tree. Toad thought that he had never seen a sight more lovely than her lemon-colored feathers flashing among the pink blossoms of the cherry tree. Watching her soar made toad quite dizzy, and glad he was firmly entrenched on the rich smelling ground.
“Yes, to each his own indeed,” he croaked.
