a song
I’ve started dancing.
All those serious young men take me in their arms and then,
we go whirling and twirling. Spinning round and round the floor,
I can never get enough. I keep coming back for more.
~
You and I never danced, at least not in the usual way.
We just held on for dear life and tumbled headlong into lightness.
As for music, as we took our turn around the room,
We held our breath, the world receded, two of us was all we needed – then.
~
I remember when we spent the whole morning riding bikes
and the breezy afternoon out in a meadow flying kites.
As higher and higher our dancing paper soared,
we kept running out of string, you kept running back for more.
You and I never danced, at least not in the usual way.
We just held on for dear life and tumbled headlong into laughter.
There was no music, as we took our spin around the day,
’til out of breath, the world receded, two of us was all we needed – then.
~
If you wonder, how I’ve been, since the time you flew away,
left me waving sad and friendless at a runway that seemed endless.
I’ve been dancing, and turning,
spinning round and round the floor.
I can never get enough. I keep running back for more.
I just keep dancing.
